Description
The male Northern Cardinal is perhaps responsible for getting more people to open up a field guide than any other bird. They're a perfect combination of familiarity, conspicuousness, and style: a shade of red you can't take your eyes off. Even the brown females sport a sharp crest and warm red accents. Cardinals don't migrate and they don't molt into a dull plumage, so they're still breathtaking in winter's snowy backyards. In summer, their sweet whistles are one of the first sounds of the morning.

Lisa, wow, what a moment captured. As a few others stated, it is difficult to catch these beauties in action. Great job catching the front view. Love the snow in the background. Beautifully composed. l/v
Lisa Kilby replied:
Thanks so much Emmy! It would seem we now have a couple of cardinal families inhabiting our back yard and woods :)

I like the composition and colors contrasts, but I would also have liked a sharper face of the bird, still a fantastic capture, Lisa! l/f

I am intrigued by the soft focus, as it shows the movement of flight. The contrast between the cardinal and the frosty foliage is alluring. The muted focus of the background draws the eye to the subject quite nicely. Good work. l/f

Great how he stands out against the background, but hard to get into focus that close while in flight!

Hard catch in flight, but stands out nicely against the muted background. Nice job.

Great capture! Would have loved to see the birds face in a little more focus (unless it just my old eyes!)
Lisa Kilby replied:
I would have liked it more in focus as well...I totally agree! Thank you, Michael!

That's not an easy thing to do...those guys are fast. Especially beautiful in the snow...very nice.

Lisa, what a beautiful capture. To get one of these little guys moving right at you is quite a feat.

Great capture. I know how hard it is to get this shot because I have tried without success. Perfect timing.
